Women RUNNERS-UP in INAUGURAL 5’s
Te Awamutu Sports Ecolab Premier Women were runners-up today in Waikato Hockey’s inaugural Premier Open 5-aside tournament held over the weekend.
Operating under FIH 5-aside rules, the competition saw men’s and women’s club sides from Waikato, Tauranga, Hawkes Bay, Auckland and North Harbour provide a spectacle of fast-paced hockey. Our newly formed Women’s team was particularly impressive going through undefeated on the Saturday, and after only conceding one narrow loss on Day 2 found themselves in the final against a talented Howick-Pakuranga side.
The tightly contested low scoring final did eventually swing Howick’s way seeing them take the Women’s trophy, winning 2:0. However Te Awamutu’s Orewa Hepi cleared any rivals to take the Highest Goal scorer trophy in the women’s tournament.
Our Premier Men’s side also only conceded one loss in pool play over the weekend, but this saw them play-off for 3rd and 4th in the men’s competition, losing on shoot-outs to University after drawing 2:2 at full-time.
