Danielle Both from Te Awamutu Sports with her Waikato Player of the Year Award

Another Waikato Hockey winter season is over with both the Midlands Intercity and domestic Waikato Hockey competitions holding their respective finals days over the weekend.

The Midlands Intercity finals day held in Tauranga on Saturday saw our Premier Men finish 4th in the Midlands Intercity Competition losing the 3rd/4th playoff to Fraser Tech 2:4. Then on Sunday the Waikato Championship Finals and Prizegiving day was held across all the non-Premier grades in glorious spring sunshine at the Gallaghers Hockey turf in Hamilton.

This saw three of our teams compete in finals. Unfortunately we weren’t able to pull off any victories this year – both our Absolute Storage and Makos mens teams losing their respective games and our Blue women unable to defend their Premier Reserve title against Hamilton Old Girls. The latter and final game of the day proved a thriller for spectators with a 3:3 draw at full time meaning two spells of 6 minutes golden goal was to follow with 9 then 7 player dropoffs respectively. Scores were still locked after this with penalty shootouts then deciding the winner.

However a big congratulations goes to the Te Awamutu’s Premier Reserve women’s captain Danielle Botha who picked up the Waikato trophy for Premier Reserve female player of the year at Waikato Hockey’s official prizegiving that followed – well done Danielle!!
